CBD in the treatment of psychosis

by in About CBD 12 January 2019

Our whole body contains internal systems of receptors, the activation of which allows us to regulate the state of our body. We know the effects of adrenaline, dopamine and acetylcholine, you can find a huge amount of materials on them and their functioning has been tested from almost every angle. So why do we know so little about the endocannabinoid system and why is this the least known and tested system so far? This is a question for a separate article. However, the fact that we know so little about the effects of cannabinoids on our body leaves much to discover. As soon as many premises indicated a wide range of activities of these compounds and more attention was finally paid to them, cannabinoids’ enormous clinical potential was immediately discovered as well. They have found application in treating as severe diseases as psychosis or schizophrenia.

The effect on these diseases is explained by the regulation of endocannabinoid production of neurotransmitters in the brain. As we mentioned in the previous article, it has been shown that CBD has an impact on the 5-HT 1A (hydroxytryptamine) receptors. Due to the inhibitory reaction, 5-HT 1A signaling is slowed down which results in a significant weakness of psychosis. For comparison, substances such as LSD, mescaline or psilocybin contained in hallucinogenic mushrooms stimulate 5-HT 1A receptors.

Who should use the treatment

In people susceptible to psychosis, and therefore neurotransmitter hyperactivity in nerve synapses, psychological illness may occur. In the mentioned people, the illnesses may be triggered under the influence of THC (tetrahydrocannabinoid) contained in cannabis alone. Yet again, we must stress here that CBD oils do not contain THC, but even more importantly – CBD antagonizes the action of THC, that is, reduces its effect on the body and prevents the emergence of psychosis.

It’s hard to determine who is susceptible to psychosis and who is not. It is recorded in our genes. In case of schizophrenia, it has been noticed that people with a family record of the disease are more susceptible, similarly with other mental illnesses. This is another argument for the supplementation of CBD oils.
